88 Strings

88 Strings is a Canadian quartet that mixes traditional Chinese, Persian and Western plucked instruments, presenting new musical inventions and adventures written or arranged specifically for the group.

Described by an audience member as "plucked string heaven," 88 Strings’ unique sound blends classical and world music together into enveloping and often hypnotic music.

88 strings presents a program of classical music from the cultures of Spain, China, Persia, France, and Canada, from lyrical classics by Granados and Satie, to Oliver’s arrangement of a work by Chinese composer Wei-Guang Liu, to new inter-cultural music by Samandari and ensemble members Oliver and Razmi.

The ensemble was formed as an initiative of the Vancouver Inter-cultural Orchestra (VICO) in 2020, who sponsored their first activities giving composer workshops and concerts.

88 Strings’ first performances took place during VICO’s “The Longest Night: Music For Solstice” in December 2020.

“The audience response to 88 Strings was exceptional. Audiences were deeply appreciative of the ensemble’s remarkable artistry and the beautiful, evocative colours created by their diverse instruments. 88 Strings is one of the most unique and compelling quartets we’ve presented—engaging, distinctive, and artistically superb. I recommend them wholeheartedly to any presenter seeking a truly memorable concert experience.” Howard Jang, ArtSpring

88 Strings is available to perform programs of music of between 30 to 100 minutes duration. A one hour school show is also available upon request.
